John Thomas Howell (November 6, 1903^[1] – May 7, 1994^[2]) was an American botanist and Eriogonum expert. He was the assistant of Alice Eastwood.

The genus Johanneshowellia (Howell's buckwheat) of the Polygonaceae family is named in his honor.^[3]^[4]

The standard author abbreviation J.T.Howell is used to indicate this individual as the author when citing a botanical name.^[5]
